Episode 68 - Radical Acceptance: How To Stop Emotional Pain From Turning Into Suffering Through A Mindfulness Practice

What Is Radical Acceptance? Here are some things to notice in your day to day life. 

  • Catching your “shoulds,” “ought tos,” and “musts” embedded in thoughts and feelings that counter acceptance, such as “It’s not fair”; “It shouldn’t be this way”; and “I wish it were different.” But, rather, have acceptance of things as they are.
  • Understanding what you can and cannot control in life.
  • Internalizing that thoughts and feelings can’t be controlled no matter how hard we try to change, modify, or adjust them. Even if they can be temporarily contained, they eventually return.

One trick to approaching radical acceptance, according to Tara Brach, is to keep the acronym RAIN in mind. RAIN stands for: Recognize and pause to notice; Allow, or accept your current experience; Investigate, by pinpointing what is happening in your mind and body; then Nurture, by bringing compassion to yourself.
